Irlanda, 1979. Frank y Gerard, dos jóvenes terroristas, son detenidos y juzgados Frank es condenado a cadena perpetua, y Gerard a doce años. Ellos y trescientos compañeros, se niegan a vestir el uniforme reglamentario, porque se consideran prisioneros de guerra. Después de algunos enfrentamientos, se llega a un acuerdo: los terroristas, tal y como pedían, podrán vestir ropa de calle, pero el Gobierno concede también ese privilegio a los presos comunes; así que renace el conflicto. Fuera de la cárcel, la madre de Gerard, antes contraria a cualquier tipo de violencia, se va acercando cada vez más a la posición de su nueva amiga, la madre de Frank, que es una nacionalista radical.
