Película basada en la novela de Denis Johnson. La trama comienza siguiendo a una mujer estadounidense anónima, que vivía en Managua, Nicaragua en 1984, durante el gobierno Sandinista. Originalmente viajó a Nicaragua como observadora de un grupo pacifista. Está disgustada con la corrupción tanto de los Sandinistas como de "la estúpida CIA" mientras trabaja en ese momento como prostituta en el Hotel Intercontinental de Managua, con la esperanza de salir de Nicaragua algún día. En el hotel, finalmente conoce a un empresario petrolero inglés con quien entablan un apasionado romance. Pronto ambos se ven envueltos en un peligroso laberinto de mentiras y conspiraciones, y cuando el inglés se enfada con unos socios costarricenses, los dos huyen juntos hacia la frontera obligados a intentar escapar de Nicaragua. Un estadounidense quien es probablemente un agente de la CIA los rastrea, y la presiona para que venda al inglés.
